Pretrial Orientation Program

The Pretrial Orientation Program (POP) is open to all pretrial defendants (and their families) who have been adjudicated and are awaiting sentencing or pending designation.  The program includes presentations from the US Probation Office for the District of Kansas, the US Probation Office for the Western District of Missouri, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.  During the presentations, information is provided  that will assist defendants and their families in preparing for the federal criminal justice process.  The Orientation covers the presentence interview and report, sentencing, self-surrender, the Bureau of Prisons, and reentry (residential reentry centers and supervised release).  Our hope is the information provided will allow defendants to receive the maximum benefit from incarceration, help to reduce any fear and anxiety regarding the process, assist family members of pretrial defendants with ways to help defendants, and ultimately help defendants lead to a successful life in the community following sentencing.  The program also includes a presentation by a panel of past persons under supervision who provide information about their experience in the federal criminal justice process. If you are interested in attending or have any questions about the program, please contact Sara Valdez Hoffer (913) 735-2428.
